FAQ: Common Questions About Our Italian Private Lessons

If you’re thinking about taking Italian courses but have some questions, you’re in the right place.

Choosing how to learn a new language is important, and it’s normal to have doubts before starting. To help, I’ve put together this FAQ with the most common questions I receive from prospective students.

My name is Cristiano, founder of Italian Teacher. For over ten years, I’ve been focusing on helping adult individuals and couples speak Italian confidently through personalised Italian private lessons. As a native Italian teacher, I want to give you clear and direct answers about our method, our courses and what you can expect, and why so many learners choose one-to-one lessons.

1. What makes your Italian teaching method different from other courses?

This is a key question because our method defines who we are. When I started this Italian language school, I chose a different approach from most language courses. I put the individual student at the center of everything we do.

I asked myself: what does someone learning Italian really need to feel confident speaking in real Italian settings? You can learn grammar and vocabulary through self-study or group classes, but what you really need is confidence in conversation.

That’s why I created a method tailored entirely to the student, designed to help you learn Italian fast while building both knowledge and confidence in speaking. We always begin by understanding your goals, personality, and skills. Then we design a flexible Italian course focused on giving you the tools to speak Italian comfortably at your level.

We strongly believe in teaching Italian organically by combining grammar, vocabulary and culture together from the first lesson. The goal isn’t just to know Italian, it’s to use it confidently.

2. Are Italian private lessons suitable for all levels?

Absolutely. We welcome students at every stage, from complete beginners to advanced speakers aiming to refine their skills. Because our approach is fully personalized, we adapt to you, not the other way around.

We don’t strictly follow standard language level frameworks because your goals matter more than a generic label. That said, assessing your current level before starting is important.

Here’s what we do for different levels:

Beginners: We start from scratch, focusing on pronunciation, grammar, sentence structure, and basic vocabulary for everyday situations. After about 10 lessons, you’ll have a solid foundation to continue learning.

Intermediate speakers: You already know some Italian. We focus on filling gaps and helping you use the language comfortably. We mostly speak Italian in lessons, using English only when needed. You’ll practice with personalized materials and learn to talk about past experiences and opinions.

Advanced speakers: You can express yourself well, and lessons often become lively conversations. We work on deepening vocabulary and correcting subtle errors. The goal is true fluency, including debating complex topics and understanding Italian media without subtitles.

Whatever the level, we build confidence through knowledge and practice at your pace.

3. What materials do you use?

We don’t usually rely on standard textbooks. Most are designed for group classes, not for individual students with different goals and rhythms.

Instead, we create tailored materials based on your level, objectives and interests. They include grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure and cultural references — all connected in a coherent way. This makes your learning more practical and helps you understand how the language works in real communication.

Materials are shared as PDFs, so you can use them on any device or print them if you prefer. You can review them between lessons or use them as homework, depending on how much time you have.

4. How do private Italian lessons work?

Each lesson has a clear structure built around natural conversation adapted to your level. Beginners might describe their home or daily routine; advanced learners may discuss current events or travel plans.

We always keep space for your questions, and when useful, we review homework together. From there, we move into grammar or vocabulary that comes directly from the conversation, making it immediately relevant. We follow a simple 1+1 approach: we only move forward when the previous topic is clear.

Lessons end with short exercises so you can apply what you’ve just learned.

Example (beginner level): — Cosa fai questo weekend? (What are you doing this weekend?) — Vado al mercato con mia sorella. (I’m going to the market with my sister.)

This structure keeps Italian private lessons practical, interactive and focused on what you personally need to start speaking Italian confidently.

5. Do you offer a free trial lesson? How are courses structured?

Yes. A free trial lesson allows us to meet, discuss your motivation, and evaluate your current level. I’ll also show you how I would structure a personalised Italian course for you and what materials we would use. If you’re interested, we talk about scheduling and practical details.

Courses are organised in blocks of 10 one-hour lessons, usually once or twice a week. The main advantage is flexibility: you choose days and times, and we can start immediately. While the structure can adapt to specific needs, beginners benefit from following the standard 10-lesson progression to build a solid base.

Our goal is to make learning Italian clear, flexible and effective — a real investment in your communication skills.
